The first few days of your child’s life are some of the most precious, that you will yearn to remember when they are all grown up. From every tiny detail to creative sets and custom made photography props, your miracle will be captured in the most beautiful way. Newborn photographs tell the story of a baby’s introduction to family and the world. The images of your baby’s first experiences will provide you and your family with memories of this momentous occasion for decades to come.
WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY NEWBORN SESSION?
At least one month before your due date, contact me to set an telephone/email appointment to discuss the upcoming photography session for your “soon-to-arrive” baby. You will be ask to fill questionnaire in the comfort of your own home so I can tailor the session around your needs. Schedule your newborn session in the first three weeks after birth while the baby is still quite sleepy and can be moved around and positioned more naturally. Once babies discover the joy of stretching, it is challenging to get them to curl up in those adorable, sleepy newborn positions. Studio newborn sessions are focused on making the baby look sweet and tender with different poses. I will use blankets, wraps, hats and headbands to create these beautiful scenes with your adorable new baby.
WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU?
A special blanket, a family heirloom prop, the cute hat that Grandma made, name-letters or a special stuffed toy can all be easily incorporated into your baby’s first photographs. Laura Chen Photography has a variety of props to enhance your baby’s first photography session. Bring plenty of nappies, baby wipes, extra milk (if your baby is bottle-fed) and a dummy along with any other items you wish to be included in your baby’s photo shoot. Because accidents happen, it is also wise to bring an extra change of clothing for yourself. Please note: due to safety of older siblings who visit the studio Laura Chen Photography does not have boiling water facilities. If hot water is required for bottle preparation please bring some in a Thermos flask.
WHAT TO EXPECT?
Session will take place in full of props home studio.
Laura Chen Photography has plenty of experience working with newborns and knows you should always expect the unexpected. Pee, poop, and spit up will happen, and it is apt to be deposited on props, blankets, the parent or on the photographer. Don’t panic or be embarrassed. It’s a normal part of all newborn photography sessions. Baby will also have fussy moments and that is just fine. You won’t be rushed through your session, and will have plenty of time to cuddle, change, feed, and relax your little one. A newborn session can take a few hours to allow for all the moods and needs of your baby, and the studio will be kept warmer than usual for baby’s comfort and safety. PARENTS & SIBLINGS If you want to have some newborn poses including parents or siblings, choose solid ( pastel ) color , white is always a win and coordinated clothing, but don’t have everyone match. It’s important to let the baby shine in every image, so avoid clothing that can detract from the family’s star of the day. Avoid busy patterns, cartoon characters, letters numbers or logos. If Mum wants a skin-on-skin image with the baby, a strapless or bandeau top works very well. It is also best to have siblings attend only when it is time for them to participate in the session.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SCHEDULE MY BABY’S NEWBORN PHOTO SESSION?
Schedule your newborn session as soon as possible prior to your baby’s birth. Typically after 20 week scan. Session should be completed within first three weeks from birth. Newborn images are best when baby is sleepy and easy to pose. This is when I can achieve this lovely curly poses, just like in mummy’s womb.
IS IT OKAY IF THE BABY SLEEPS MOST OF THE TIME?
Yes. I love sleepy, snuggly babies. They are very easy to pose in adorable ways when sleeping.
WHAT KIND OF CLOTHING DOES THE BABY NEED TO WEAR?
Unless you have a favourite outfit that’s important to you, babies photograph best when naked, wrapped in soft blankets, special newborn photo clothes and posed with cute props.
IS IT SAFE FOR THE BABY TO WEAR OUTFITS WORN BY OTHER BABIES?
Absolutely, hygiene is always a priority. Every item that a baby has worn even for 5 min will be laundered or dry cleaned. All items that baby will have skin to skin contact with will be disinfected. After each and every session studio floor is always disinfected thoroughly. Cleaning and hygiene is kept on the highest level.
SHOULD I BRING PROPS?
If you have a special family heirloom or toy you would like included in your baby’s photographs, you are welcome to bring them to the session. Laura Chen Photography has a large selection of wonderful props to use during your newborn session.
SHOULD BOTH PARENTS ATTEND THE PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION?
It’s always best if both parents can be present when the photographs are taken. It’s important to have photographs with both parents individually, as well as family ones.
SHOULD SIBLINGS ATTEND THE PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION?
Absolutely! The family and sibling photographs are, in my opinion, the most important.
I tend to do family portraits at the very end, right after siblings photographs. While I photograph the newest addition older children are free to enjoy snacks, toys and cartoons.
CAN OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS COME ALONG TO OBSERVE THE SESSION?
Laura Chen Photography prefers only the parents to attend the newborn photography session for several reasons. The newborn session is a lengthier session, as extra time is needed to accommodate feeding, changing, and occasionally calming a fussy baby. If you would like to bring a grandmother or other relatives please discuss it prior to the session.
MY BABY HAS BAD SKIN ( spots, scars, baby rash, acne etc.)
This is no problem. It will all be fixed in post processing – we all know newborns haven’t got perfect looking skin.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN AFTER YOUR SESSION?
You will receive your online gallery to choose your images from or a viewing appointment will be scheduled 1-2 weeks after the session date. This is where your beautifully edited portraits will be presented to you. During the viewing appointment you will see the results of our session and this is when you will decide which package you wish to go for, which wall art would you like, whether you wish to print the album or any other products. No upfront commitment .

Photographing newborn babies is such a privilege. It takes a lot of time and patience but the reward is absolutely worth it. In the end you have these beautiful portraits of an amazing new life..
I’m very pleased to introduce this latest newborn to the blog, baby Jacob.
This little guy was so adorable and inquisitive upon arrival, he just sat there looking around taking everything in before conking out and slumbering away for the rest of the session enabling me to capture all his gorgeous little details and expressions. This little man kept his Mum and Dad waiting a little extra before joining them in this big wide world but I think you will agree he was worth the wait. His little face is perfection and his cuddles were the best!!!
It was really sweet getting to know this little trio.
Here is a little peek into Jacob’s session:
Thank you mum and dad for allowing me to capture this very special time in your life. It really was so lovely getting to know you all and meeting your little addition. Hope you enjoy your images as much as I did creating them for you.

The time has come for another beautiful baby on the blog! It’s turning out to be a very busy year with newborns!
It’s hard to know where to start describing little Piper! I met her when she was just a few days old and she really was just one of the most beautiful babies (with the thickest dark hair) I have ever seen.
I love photographing babies this age because they sleep so soundly, it makes my job easier for sure! Piper was a very entertaining model, giving us all sorts of funny facial expressions when she was awake. But as soon as she dropped off to sleep she turned into a total little angel, complete with those amazing squished up baby lips.
Here is a small selection of my favourite shots from the session…
We also got some shots with mum and dad, which I really love – it’s always nice to record the whole family on such lovely occasions…
Thank you mum and dad for allowing me to photograph this very special time in your lives. I hope you enjoy these images as much as I did creating them for you.

Everything about Rory and his newborn session was a baby photographer’s dream – a few simple yet stylish set ups, sunshine pouring through the window and an adorable family- there really wasn’t much more I could have asked for.
I’m sure you’ll agree that he’s absolutely beautiful, and although he was keen to stay awake to find out what was happening around him, we did manage to get a fair few very cute sleepy shots.
I love how this little man sleeps with a bit of a cross face on, it’s very cute. Here are a few of my favourites : )
Can you believe the soft monkey Rory is holding belonged to his mum? I really hope they continue to photograph him with the toy each year..
How gorgeous are Rory’s two sisters? And definitely the best sisters a boy could ask for- they were so sweet and loving towards him.
Not to mention his dad is a Perth legend 😉
Thank you so much mum and dad for allowing me to capture this special time in your life. Hope you enjoy these images as much as I did creating them for you.

She was a little bit older than most of the newborns I photograph, but at 4 weeks old she absolutely rocked her session.
I spend a lot of time at newborn photo sessions waiting for babies to fall asleep, and it’s not often that I meet a little one who sleeps almost the whole time he/she is here. But little Alexa was one of those sleepy babies. In fact we tried to get a few shots of her awake at the end of the session but it just wasn’t happening. She only gave us the tiniest glimpse of those big beautiful eyes, but made up for it with her super cute sleeping poses.
She was so settled that her photo session was a real pleasure.
Here are a few of my favourite photos – I absolutely adored baby Alexa’s hair- it seemed to have a life of its own! : )
Isn’t she simply divine?
Thank you mum and dad for choosing me to create these images of your beautiful little girl. I hope you enjoy these as much as I did creating them for you.

I met this beautiful family when Lucia was just over a week old for her newborn session a few months back.
Their session had it all- lots of pink, love and laughter not forgetting sleepy dust which made little Lucia an absolute dream to photograph. I spend a lot of time at newborn photoshoots waiting for babies to fall asleep, and it’s not often that I meet a baby who sleeps almost the whole time she’s here.
The girls were just great on the day of the shoot and we had such a lovely day. I adore every single image we captured! Here are just a few shots from the day..
Perfect little darling who was very content the whole session..
Undeniable sisterly love…
Adorable sleepy miles…
There isn’t anything cuter than teeny tiny baby toes…
And there isn’t anything as beautiful as sibling love.. So new, so very magical..
Thank you for having me capture these precious fleeting moments of your life, guys. Tiny baby days pass before you know it, almost in a blink of an eye, but I hope you’ll enjoy your photographs for years to come as much as I enjoyed creating them for you.

Yet again I haven’t kept my promise to blog regularly. I think I must stop apologizing and blog when I can. This year has been incredibly busy, so preparing client’s proofs and orders always takes first place. Thankfully that’s half term now finished, the place already resembles a building site a lot less and things should be back to normal again soon. Hopefully. So please forgive me and pop in now and again.
Below are some images from the session with baby Louis and his family..
Baby Louis was such a pleasure to photograph… He did so well.
And just adore his pouty lips- such a gorgeous wee boy!
He was a little star, as was his older sister Lucy, and we had an all round lovely session. Did I mention their oldest four legged brother Guinness joined them for a few family portraits too? So there were baby cuddles, toddler smiles and big sloppy Labrador kisses going around- I loved it!!
Hope you enjoy these images as much as I did creating them for this family.

We all have sweet little photo albums of us wrapped and kept safely somewhere at our parents homes..
We all had those albums taken out for our boyfriends/girlfriends to see and we, without a doubt, pulled them out when expecting our own children, right? I know I did… I wanted to flick through the pages full of my childhood and quietly imagine what my own little one will look like. Will he have the same blue eyes? Will he snuggly fit the same hand knitted outfit my mother once carefully dressed me in? I took in all imagery looking into my mums eyes in every photo knowing I will have the same loving look in my face very soon..
Sadly, our children will never know the feeling of holding and enjoying their documented childhood in a few years…
21st century has done some great things for photography.. It enabled many talented photographers to get into business and do what they love.. But it also brought in the need to have everything we own ‘digitalised’… What will we pass down through generations? A usb stick? I hope not.. I hope we still have printed photographs and beautiful photo albums our kids can hold and touch in 20 years time..
I know these parents will be able to gift their little one with just that and I’m proud to have been there to help them make it happen..
Make your usb a nice addition for future printing.. Not the only memory from your little one’s childhood.
